A
catalogue, announcement and exhibition design for the Sonoma County
Museum in Santa Rosa, California. The retrospective focused on sculpture,
paintings, drawings and ceramics created by Hudson in his studio in
Cotati, California. Our work was heavily influenced by the character
of Hudson’s workspace and materials.
Driving up Highway 101 from the Bay Area to Hudson’s home and
studio, set among vast green pastures and a thick grove of eucalyptus
trees in Cotati, a rural village in southern Sonoma County, was like
leaving one world and entering another. Although I was already familiar
with Hudson’s work, I was unprepared for the almost overwhelming
creative energy and happy excess of color and materials that greeted
me upon first entering his studio. —Michael Schwager
